Remotes, RFID, or plate recognition?
The credential decision shapes your community's security and admin burden for years. Seven dimensions, three approaches, no hand-waving.
| Dimension | Remotes | RFID | License plate recognition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware logistics | Inventory to track, stock for new residents, deactivation on turnover | Cards or fobs to issue, keep track of, and replace over time. | Nothing to hand out, the license plate is the key. |
| User friction | Locate the remote, point, press | Present the card or fob at the reader | Hands-free, the gate opens as the vehicle arrives |
| Lost credentials | Replace the device, manage deactivation | Deactivate and reissue, per resident | Not applicable |
| Audit trail | None or minimal, a valid signal, not a person | Credential-based logs | Photo-verified, timestamped record of every crossing |
| Ongoing cost | Replacements and batteries, forever | Credential costs plus reader maintenance | Subscription-based, predictable |
| Security posture | Fixed-code remotes can be cloned cheaply, no identity link | Varies by encryption level, older 125 kHz cards clone easily | Vehicle-specific with visual verification on every entry |
| Visitor management | Manual, or shared codes that leak | Temporary credentials to issue and recover | Self-service time-limited passes that expire on their own |
Remotes still make sense
for small, stable communities, very low turnover, minimal visitor traffic, and no need for access logging.
RFID fits
when the same credential should also open doors, pools, and amenities, and the lifecycle overhead is justified by system-wide consistency.
LPR excels
with high turnover, real visitor traffic, audit-trail requirements, or a board tired of managing remotes, codes, and complaints.
Most communities don't rip anything out: plates become the primary, hands-free credential, while existing remotes and the keypad stay live as backups for rental cars and edge cases. As residents get used to automatic entry, the backups see less and less use.
